Un petit tour d'Iqaluit !! A tour of Iqaluit !!

Un petit tour de ville en attendant les autres petites histoires. Commençons par l’École primaire Nakasuk, bâtit à l’époque ou les fenêtres n’étaient pas vraiment à la mode par ici. Personnellement, je trouve qu’elle ressemble à un bunker. Tout comme l’école secondaire Inuksuk qui est presque identique mais bleu.
A little tour in town before I put some more juicier story. Start with Nakasuk elementary school, build when the window wasn’t popular at the time around here. I personally find that it look like a bunker. As like the Inuksuk high school, but blue.
Passons maintenant au Wal Mart du nord, le North Mart. Plusieurs disent qu’il appartient à WalMart, je ne peux confirmer. Ici, les prix n’ont rien à voir avec les prix de par chez nous, simplement multiplier par 2 tous les prix et vous ne serez pas très loin de la vérité. Ici tout est très cher, l’épicerie, le loyer, l’essence, …
Now let us continue with the Wal-Mart of the north, North Mart. A lot of people say that it belongs to Wal-Mart, I can’t confirm. Here, the prices have nothing to do with the prices down south, simply multiply by 2 all the prices and you will not be very far from the truth. Here everything is very expensive, the grocery, the rent, the gas, …

Ici on entre dans le centre-ville d’Iqaluit, près de 8000 habitants vive ici, on y trouve les banques CIBC et RBC, le bureau de poste et plusieurs autres commerces. Vous remarquerez les poteaux de bois près de la rue, ils sont là pour protéger les piétons des automobiles et des motoneiges, ici pas de trottoir.
Here we enter Iqaluit downtown area, nearly 8000 peoples live around here, we can find the CIBC and RBC, the post office and several other store. You will notice the wood post close to the street, they are there to protect the pedestrians from the cars and ski-doo, here we don’t have sidewalks.
Ici c’est le point le plus passant de la ville, avec ses 4 arrêts qui d’après moi devraient être remplassé par un feu de circulation, un carrefour giratoire, un céder ou un tunnel. En passant, ici il n’y a aucun feu de circulation mais quelques céder et beaucoup d’arrêts. Le matin, le midi et le soir, on peut prendre plus de 10 minutes pour passer.
Here it’s the busiest place in town, with its 4 stops which can be change by a traffic light, a roundabout, a yield or a tunnel. By the way, here there is no traffic light, some yield and a lot of stops. In the morning, at noon and in the evening, we can take more than 10 minutes to pass there.
Nous avons plusieurs édifices à bureaux, le gouvernement fédéral et provincial sont en majorité à Iqaluit, un peu normal pour la capitale du Nunavut.
We have a lot of office building, the federal and provincial government is here in Iqaluit, quite normal for the capital on the Nunavut.
Nous avons ici à Iqaluit des gens de plusieurs religions, ci-dessus, l’église catholique, son adresse est assez drôle, 911. À Iqaluit nous avons des catholiques, des anglicans, des témoins de Jéhova, des musulmans, des boudhistes, des pentecôtistes, des baha’is, des mormons, des chamanistes et surement d’autres dont je suis pas au courant.
We have around here a lot of different religion, here we have the catholic church, funny, their adress is 911. In Iqaluit we have the catholics, anglicans, Jehova witness, muslims, boudhists, pentecôtists, baha’is, mormons, chamanists and some that I didn’t know of at the moment.
Vous voyez l’hotel de ville, le poste de pompier, le poste de police et l’ancienne arèna, en fait le seul qui en en fonction, ils ont un nouvel arèna mais ils n’ont jamais pu s’en servir à cause d’un problème de structure de la batisse.
This place is the City Hall, Fire house, the by-law office (police) and the old arena, really the only one that is functionnal, they have a new one, but they never use it because they had problem with the structure of the building.
Ce merveilleux édifice est le nouveau palais de justice, ils ont gardé l’appellation pour l’ancien palais de justice pour l’ancien, mais l’ancien contient que des bureaux.
This nice building is the new court house, they keep the name old court house for the old one, but at the old court house, it’s only office place now.
Cet édifice est le Collège Arctique, l’étape nécessaire avant d’aller à Ottawa ou ailleurs pour continuer à l’université.
This building you can see the Artic College, the last step before going to Ottawa or anywhere else for university.
Ici c’est la centrale électrique à l’huile d’Iqaluit, ne semble pas trop pollué, qui sait.
Here is the iqaluit oil power plant, it doesn’t seems clean, who knows.

The OPD (Out Patient Departement), they call it OPD around here, we can say hospital, on the right you have the old section call now the clinic.

Une photo du cœur de la ville d’Iqaluit à l’autre extrémité de la ville, les réservoirs d’essence et d’huile qui permet de survivre pendant toute l’année. Étant sur une île au milieu de nulle part, notre seul moyens de ravitaillement pour l’huile et l’essence est le bateau. L’avion sert à l’année pour les marchandises et surtout quand la glace recouvre la baie de Frobisher.

A picture of the heart of the town of Iqaluit on the other side of the city, the oil and fuel tanks which make it possible to survive all year long. Living on an island in the middle of nowhere, the only mean of supply is the boat for the oil and fuel. The plane is used all year long for the goods and especially when the ice recovers the Frobisher Bay.
